Benefits increase significantly at 70% (SMC eligibility), 100% (full P&T benefits), and with dependents. TDIU (Total Disability for Individual Unemployability) pays the 100% rate when the veteran is unable to work due to service-connected conditions.

Why VA Math Isn't Simple Addition

VA uses a "whole person" method. Each condition reduces what remains of a "100% healthy person," so ratings don't add linearly:

  • Start with 100% (the whole person)
  • Apply the highest rating first: A 70% disability takes 70% of the 100% = 30% remains
  • Apply the next rating to what remains: A 50% disability takes 50% of 30% = 15 more points impaired; 30% − 15% = 15% remains
  • Subtract remaining from 100%: 100% − 15% = 85% combined
  • Round to nearest 10% (VA standard): 85% rounds to 90%

Result: four 10% ratings combined = 34%, not 40%. This is why identifying and filing your most severe conditions matters — your anchor rating has an outsized impact on the final number.
